The holiday season is over and there are many newly engaged couples planning their wedding day. As they start the planning process there are many things to consider. Right away they will need to make two big decisions. The first is where do I want to get married? The second is when do I want to get married? Very shortly after that there are several other important decisions that need to be made rather quickly! After you both have chose a date and venue here are three other vendors that need to be booked rather quickly!
Wedding Photographer
DJ
Videographer
Why are these three vendors so important to book early in the process? Typically, they only book one wedding per date. Other vendors such as wedding planners, hair and makeup artists, florists, cake, catering, stationary and transportation have a team which allows them to book multiple weddings/events per day.
Wedding photographers play such a hands on role in the day. If there is no wedding planner, the photographer naturally takes on the role of coordinator for the day. They assist in the making the timeline for the day. On the actual wedding day they communicate with other vendors to keep everything flowing and as stress free as possible!
Here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota wedding dates book up extremely fast between May into late October. Peak dates are booked typically 15-18 months in advance. If you are getting married on a Saturday during these peak months I would contact several photographers as soon as possible! As I said these dates tend to go fast and we can only be in one place at a time.
If photography is very important to you and you truly love a certain photographers style I would consider reaching out to them prior to picking a wedding date and venue. That way, when you go to look at a venue you will be able to plan around their available schedule.
Like I said there is no set ‘rules’ as to when you should book a photographer but I generally book 12-15 months in advance. Prior to booking all my weddings I ask to meet up or do a phone call with each Bride. That way we know we are a good match and have the same goals. I love working with couples who are just as excited to be working with me!
All in all–Make it a priority to get the major vendors booked right away. Then you can sit back and enjoy a glass of champagne and celebrate!
